Magnetic Poetry Contest–2025 Winners!

For the second year, UDM’s English Department sponsored a Magnetic Poetry Contest on the 2nd floor of Briggs. Students, faculty, staff, passers-by, all were invited to try their hand at original compositions using the building blocks of poetry: words on the page locker! Read the winning student poems below.

1st Place: Ashlee Jones, “Somewhere In Between”

Ashlee Jones is an emerging, boundless poet further exploring finding her voice emotionally through her writing. She is a university student at Detroit Mercy studying Communications and Creative Writing.

2nd Place: Liberty Brooke, “My Old Cowboy”

Liberty Brooke is a writer who believes that through poetry we should be urged to never accept the unacceptable and immortalize the little joys of life. Her works can also be found in Sandhills Literary Magazine, Dark Matter Literary Magazine (2034-24) ( Issue #48, 2024), Eber & Wein’s Quilted Whispers 2023 Anthology, and Blue Marble Review’s November 2023 issue.

3rd Place: Ayshah Khalid, “Drunk in Love”

Aysha Khalid is a junior biology major at UDM. She enjoys expressing herself through poetry, writing about emotions, personal experiences, and the beauty of everyday life in ways that feel both honest and creative. She is also passionate about photography, which allows her to explore creativity while capturing moments that tell a story.

Honorable Mention: Isabella Goolsby, “No Good Political Movement”

Isabella Goolsby is a pre-PA senior and dual majoring in Biology and English Literature. She loves writing little poems here and there, and was super happy to be selected as an honorable mention for this year’s contest.

Honorable Mention: Lena Williams, “The Call”

Lena Williams is a junior, majoring in English and minoring in Religious Studies. She enjoys writing surrealist poetry, spending time in nature with her family, friends, and dog. Her work explores the awe and wonder found in the ordinary.

Congratulations to this year’s winners and everyone who created original work. The magnets will remain on the 2nd floor of Briggs, so come try your hand at your own magnetic poem–you never know who will discover your work as they pass by!
